Composed using the voice of a young woman singing a tribal Creek lullaby in 1941, this song juxtaposes the 3 predominant cultures of the early United States. The piece combines the Native American lullaby with an African-American field holler and Appalachian banjo player – Wade Ward – playing the classic tune, ‘Cluck Old Hen.’ All we know about the young woman is her name – Margaret – and the sound of her voice.
